Different target operations in Nyarugenge and Kamonyi led to the arrest of four suspected drug dealers, as Police intensifies its anti-drug campaigns across the country.
Thamar Mukandamage, 55, was on February 16 arrested in Nzove Cell, Kanyinya Sector with 972 boules of cannabis, while Marthin Manirafasha was found in possession of seven cartons and a full sack of a banned gin called Chief Waragi.
The suspects are currently held at Police stations in Mageragera and Nyamirambo pending further investigations.
In another operation in Kamonyi District, Southern Province, two women identified as Bernadette Uwiduhaye 43 and Jacqueline Nyiramajyabere 31, were arrested with 940 boules of cannabis and are currently held at Runda Police Station are further investigations commence.
The operations were facilitated by tips from the residents, who provided credible information to Police that led to the arrest of the suspects and confiscation of the drugs.
"These operations were a good example of the usefulness of information provided by residents to Police through community policing. We should continue working together in order to rid the country of all crimes that may destabilize the peace we currently enjoy," Police Spokesperson for Central Region, Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi said.
Dealing in illegal drugs has adverse effects on a society and an individual, while addiction to drugs like marijuana and cannabis, often has a terrible mental effect on an individual’s brain, thus corrupting their judgment and in the worst case scenario, leading to death.
It is for this reason that Rwanda National Police has been at the forefront of fighting against this scourge wherever it has occurred in our society. But one ought to credit the role played by the general population in this fight through provision of credible information on dealers.
Besides constantly sensitizing masses throughout the country, Police has ensured that day and night patrols monitor the borderlines against any criminals that plan to smuggle drugs into Rwanda - and they have been largely successful in apprehending suspects and confiscating drugs.
