Foreign truck intercepted trafficking cannabis

Police in Kirehe district intercepted a Kigali-bound Tanzanian registered transit vehicle with about 200 kilogrammes of cannabis.

The truck registration number T257 BRX was intercepted on July 4 in Rebero Village, Muganza cell of Gatore sector.

Senior Supt. Benoit Nsengiyumva, Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, confirmed the development.

"We received information from members of the public that there are sacks of cannabis that were trafficked into the country on a motorcycle through a porous border in Kirehe, which they loaded on a Kigali-bound truck, which we trailed and intercepted and seized the drugs," said SSP Nsengiyumva.

The truck driver and his co-driver, he said, were also arrested.

They are currently detained at Kirehe Police station as investigations continue.

"A case file has been opened against the two suspects and we are investigating to ensure that all those connected to this illegal act are brought to justice," he said.

He commended the role played by the general public in fighting trade and use of illicit drugs.
