Five arrested with narcotics in Kigali

Police operations within Kigali have led to the arrest of five people who are suspected to be part of the network that traffics cannabis from the neighboring countries.

They were at the time of their separate arrests found in possession of a combined 2000 pellets of cannabis, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.

“All the five suspects were arrested in various operations conducted in the past week in Kigali,” SSP Hitayezu said.

The suspects include two women, including one Jeanne Kayitesi, who was intercepted as with 980 pellets of cannabis from Rubavu to Kigali. Another Felicite Nyiransengiimana was found with 600 rolls.

“The arrest of these people followed information we received from the public that informed our successful operations. We appreciate this partnership and continue to encourage people to provide information whenever they suspect or witness any crime,” said SSP Hitayezu.

He, however, observed that traffickers keep changing tricks but lauded the role of community policing in unearthing such tricks and arresting suspects.

Similar operations have been held in different parts of the country and resulted to the arrest of several traffickers and seizure of the substances.

Two weeks ago, Police in Nyabihu District seized about 5000 of rolls of cannabis from a drug dealers. The suspected drug dealers were transporting the narcotics on a motorcycle.

In the continued fight against drug abuse, the federation of motorcycle cooperatives recently announced that it will blacklist any member that will be caught in drug related crimes, among others.
