More than 300 people including health workers from various hospitals in the Eastern Province, have been given basic knowledge and skills in fire safety as the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB) continues to strengthen efforts against fire disasters in the country.
Those trained on Wednesday, February 2, include 169 staff of Kibungo Referral hospital in Ngoma District and 84 staff at Rwinkwavu hospital in Kayonza District.
Other 52 are police officers attached to Ngoma District Police Unit, who were trained Thursday, February 4.
Trainees in a one-day practical sessions include doctors, heads of departments, nurses, technicians, cleaners and security guards.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Paul Gatambira, the commanding officer for FRB, said that similar knowledge and skills will be extended to staff in other institutions in the Eastern Province and other parts of the country.
"We are trying to reach out to as many people as possible to prevent or reduce fire disasters, which mainly result from reckless human actions. This practical campaign is meant to raise awareness on causes of fire and to give them skills on how to use basic firefighting equipment to put out fire," ACP Gatambira said.
He added that close to 300 staff of Kirehe District hospital will also be trained this Friday.
The training designed to equip people with basic skills against fire emergencies enlightens them on the causes and the components of fire, evacuation procedures, and firefighting techniques using fire extinguishers, sand, fire blankets for the case of cooking gas.
It also teaches people how safe to use cooking gas. The campaign also involves inspecting facilities and advising owners or the management to fix the identified fire installation risks, which can ignite fire.
