The Rwanda National Police (RNP), through its Fire and Rescue Brigade, has trained more than 1,000 students and teachers from ETEFOP TSS, a vocational and technical school under the Diocese of Ruhengeri in Musanze District, on fire prevention, firefighting, and emergency response.
The training, conducted on Wednesday, May 20, forms part of the Police’s nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on the causes of fires, preventive measures, and basic firefighting skills, to reduce fire-related damage and loss.
During the session, participants were equipped with practical knowledge on how to prevent fires caused by cooking gas and how to properly use different types of fire extinguishers in emergencies.
Speaking to the trainees, the Northern Province Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Ignace Ngirabakunzi, emphasized the importance of understanding the causes of fire incidents as a key step toward effective prevention and response.

“The intensity of a fire depends on what caused it and what it has burned,” he said. “These factors determine the measures that should be taken to fight it quickly, because the longer a fire lasts, the greater the destruction it causes.”
CIP Ngirabakunzi noted that fires remain a major threat to public safety and urged participants to apply the knowledge they acquired, share it with others, and promptly report fire outbreaks to the Police for timely rescue and emergency assistance.
The head of ETEFOP TSS, Father Remedi Didier Dushyirehanwe, commended the Rwanda National Police for providing the training, describing it as both timely and beneficial to the school community.
"It is not only those who attended that will benefit, because we will also share this knowledge with our families, friends, and others in the community. It is for the safety of our schools, families and communities,” Fr Dushyirehanwe said.
