Despite the recent spate of fire incidents, fire-related cases reduced tremendously in the past years, the Minister of Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harelimana said.
He was speaking on July 20 at a talk-show held at office of the Prime Minister to highlight on fire disasters in the country, and aired live on the national television and radio.
The talk-show was also attended by Séraphine Mukantabana, Minister for Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Théos Badege, Commissioner for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Rwanda National Police.
Minister Harelimana said 47 fire incidents were recorded in this year's first six months, 45 of them in the City of Kigali.
About 61 percent, he said, were due to short circuit caused by poor electrical installation, use of substandard electrical device and cables and overloading among others.
He said the Prime Minister's instructions on fire fighting stipulates that every citizen should live in a premise that has two doors through which those inside can easily exit when fire breaks out and should possess fire extinguishers.
The report by the recently constituted taskforce to establish the cause of the recent fire incidents in Kigali and Rubavu district and even other parts of the country will be made public before the end of the year.
He assured the public of their security.
ACP Badege appealed to the public to always call the toll-free numbers 111, 112, and 0788311224, 0788311120,0788311335 to contain fire before it escalates.
