The Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) arrested two people including a woman, in Gasabo District on March 10, suspected to be part of the ring that distributes cannabis especially in the City of Kigali.
The suspects; Mugwizambaraga Jean Bosco, 34, and Uwizeyimana Angelique, 33, were arrested red-handed in Bumbogo Sector where they were allegedly supplying narcotics to one of their retailers, Police said.
“Mugwizambaraga was found in possession of 300 pellets of cannabis while Uwizeyimana was caught with 150 rolls. They were handed over to RIB (Rwanda Investigation Bureau) at Bumbogo station,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorett Umutesi said.
The arrest of the duo comes a week after other suspected major suppliers of cannabis were also taken into custody with large quantities of narcotics.
Late last month, ANU also arrested, separately, two notorious drug traffickers in Kayonza and Rwamagana Districts with sacks of cannabis.
“The increased operations based on the list compiled with the help of the general public; target mainly traffickers and suppliers,” CIP Umutesi said, warning that the “operations are continuous.”
Illicit drugs are classified as one of the major obstacles affecting youth development, affecting education and health sectors.
Thousands of young people currently in rehabilitation centres fall in the age bracket of those supposed to be in school or in active labour force.
