Fighting illicit drugs: Over 2000 litres of substances seized

Strengthened operations against illicit drugs seized over 2000 litres of locally made substances, in different parts of the country.

The operations were conducted jointly with local leaders based on information provided by the People, Police said.

The substances with different brand names were seized in Nyarugenge, Huye, Gisagara, Kamonyi and Nyaruguru districts. At least ten people all caught red-handed, either distilling or selling the substances.

In Kigali, Police spokesperson for the Central region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi said that “operations will continue alongside awareness campaigns to be both on the preventive side and to arrest defiant dealers.”

CIP Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Southern region Police spokesperson, also said that “fighting drug related crimes remains among major security operations and awareness.”

“Majority crimes like gender based violence, assault, child abuse, domestic conflicts and theft are in one way or another linked to drugs or committed by people under the influence of substances. This is a trend as the Police, local leaders and the people through awareness and information sharing on dealers, we strive to combat,” CIP Karekezi said.

In the Northern Province, CIP Hamdun Twizeyimana identified the districts of Burera and Gicumbi as ones with high cases related to drugs.

“Gicumbi and Burera are on the borderline, and drug dealers tend to use porous borders. However, the residents themselves have taken an upper hand; they have formed an anti-drugs club in all the sectors, which are helping the Police to identify the dealers and routes they use; many of these dealers have been arrested through this strong partnership,” CIP Twizeyimana said.
