About 9000 litres of locally made illicit brew were seized in a police-led operation conducted in Rwamagana District on December 4.
The substances were seized from two illegal distilleries in Karenge and Fumbwe sectors. The psychotropic substances were disposed of in presence of hundreds of residents, who they were urged to report people in their communities that distill such substances.
The illicit brew said to be made out of mixed bricks, sorghum flour, fertilizers, sugarcane residues, sugar and water, among others.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, while addressing residents shortly after disposing of the substances, reminded them that starting a distillery one has to be authorized and to use specified ingredients that are not harmful to consumers.
“This is an ongoing operation countrywide, and if you know that you are involved in making or selling these substances you will be arrested,” CIP Kanamugire emphasised.
The fight, he said, is aimed at ensuring the health of Rwandans and preventing other criminal acts related to gender violence, child abuse, assault and theft that drives abusers into.
CIP Kanamugire thanked the residents of Rwamagana for reporting the two distillers, and urged them to maintain the community policing spirit, and report all wrongdoers to make their communities safe.
The ongoing joint operation by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Standards Bureau (RSB), has so far closed close to 80 illegal distilleries across the country, majority 45 in the Eastern Province.
