Fighting drug abuse: Awareness campaign continues in schools

In an effort to further extend community policing initiatives, Rwanda National Police (RNP) on October 21, continued its anti-narcotics awareness campaign in Bugesera District where officers met with 622 students of Kibenga Primary School and tutored them about effects of drug abuse.

“It’s criminal to use, carry, or sell narcotic substances like cannabis, illicit brew and other drugs. These substances have a health and financial effect to whoever abuses them,” Bugesera District Community Liaison Officers, Assistant Inspector of Police Cyprian Uwitonze, told the students.

AIP Uwitonze went on to tell the children that, “Any person who consumes drugs is not in their rightful state of mind and their actions may not be appropriate. Adults may turn violent while children drop out of school. The end-results are bad and affects everyone, that’s why we urge you to be ambassadors of anti-drug abuse.”

She told students to also disassociate themselves from anyone who may lure them into consuming drugs, instead report such people.

The Headmaster of Kibenga Primary school, Robert Sendegeya, thanked Police for its continued community policing initiative of reaching out to all categories of people and educating them against crimes.

Meanwhile, similar campaigns were held Ruhango and Huye Districts on October 20, where students of “Indangaburezi College of Education, and Ecole Secondaire de Regina Pacis respectfully, received similar messages and urged to be agents of change and crime prevention in particular.

Police officers gave lengthy lectures to the students about effects of drug abuse and their contribution in ensuring a drug-free community.
