Police in Nyabihu District is holding two drivers accused of attempting to bribe Traffic Police Officers to buy their way out of traffic offences.
Arrested on March 30, the suspects identified as Jonathan Dusingizimana, 35 and Jacques Nyirinkwaya, 20, are currently detained at Jomba and Mukamira Police stations, respectively.
Dusingizimana, who at the time was driving a Daihatsu Truck RAB 715N, is accused of attempting to bribe an officer with Rwf2, 000, after he was caught driving the truck on old tyres, which is against road traffic rules and regulations.
On another hand, Nyirinkwaya allegedly offered the same bribe to an officers to avoid being fined for overloading.
Police statistics indicate that about 200 people, majority drivers and commercial motorcyclists, have been arrested since August last year, in an intensified Police crackdown against graft.
The Western Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, lauded Police Officers for acting in a professional manner.
He warned the public against acts of bribery, which he said attracts more offences. He called upon the general public to stand up against this act by reporting those involved in communities.
Receiving bribe among Police Officers attracts severe penalties including being expelled from the force.
