ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: Police join Gasogi community in tree planting to fight soil erosion

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Saturday, October 25, joined residents of Gasogi in Gasabo District for the monthly Umuganda that saw more than 10,000 trees planted to restore and protect the environment on Ubwiza bwa Gasogi hill.

Led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Teddy Ruyenzi, the Commissioner for Community Policing, hundreds of police officers worked alongside local authorities, community members, and youth volunteers in a collective effort to prevent soil erosion and advance environmental conservation.

While addressing participants, ACP Ruyenzi commended the strong turnout and reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to supporting programmes that enhance community socio-economic wellbeing.

“Planting trees is an investment in the health and resilience of our communities. Trees improve air quality, prevent soil erosion, and help maintain a clean and safe environment. We urge residents to care for the trees we planted today so that they grow and fulfil the intended purpose,” ACP Ruyenzi said.

She urged residents to remain actively engaged in community safety and to continue collaborating with security organs in preventing crime.

“Keep playing your role in safeguarding security by working with security agencies, sharing timely information, and remain vigilant for one another, as you have always done,” he said.

At the end of Umuganda, residents received messages from various government institutions, including the Ministry of Local Government, urging them to continue participating in community initiatives, embrace a culture of saving, ensure all children attend school, improve household nutrition, prevent family conflicts, and actively combat corruption.
