Over 200 youth of Muhanga Sector of Muhanga District have been challenged to play an active role in shaping safer and secure communities.
They were also urged to always strive to live a purpose-driven life, as a prerequisite for crime prevention.
The call was made by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police Angelique Abijuru in a meeting with the youth held recently.
The meeting mainly focused on fighting drug-related crimes.
“Living in a safe and secure society is what we all wish for and that’s why you need to be part of crime prevention so that we can collectively keep our communities safer,” said IP Abijuru.
She, however, hastened to add that to achieve that, “you need to live a purposeful life and keep away from immoral conducts like abusing drugs, which drives you astray and leads you to jail.”
She observed that majority of those involved in drug abuse are the youth, which is an indicator that, if the vice is not fought against, it will be a threat to future generations.
The DCLO added that drug abuse leads to, among others, theft, school dropouts and sexual behaviors, which also lead to unwanted pregnancies and HIV infections.
“Although we are seeing a tremendous decrease in drug dealings, our target is to have a society that is free of illicit drugs and the general public’s role in this campaign is paramount to report those individuals that are still involved,” she noted.
IP Abijuru further urged them to refrain from such bad and criminal behaviors and be part of anti-crime initiatives such as neighborhood watch, provide timely information about anything that might affect the security of their community like drug dealers.
