Separate Police operations conducted in Kigali in on Wednesday arrested at least suspected thieves, who were attempting to break into residential and business houses.
The suspects were especially targeting electronics, according to the Police.
“Four of the suspects were arrested in Ngara Cell, Bumbogo Sector in Gasabo District where they had broken into a house and stole a television set, gas cylinder, home theater, decoder and other interiors,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.
He identified the suspects arrested in Bumbogo as Donatien Habagusenga, Patrick Niyibaruta, Joseph Habimana and one only identified as Tuyizere.
“Another suspect identified as Emmanuel Hatangimana was arrested in Nyakabanda Sector of Nyarugenge District while breaking into a mobile phone shop. Three others were apprehended in Kivugiza of Nyamirambo also in Nyarugenge, after breaking into the house and stole a home theater, decoder and amplifier,” SSP Hitayezu added.
All cases have been handed over to Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) for further legal process, said the spokesperson.
“These suspects were arrested because of the vigilance and timely information sharing with the people and Irondo—community night patrols—in particular,” he said, calling for strengthened night patrols and real time information sharing to facilitate timely response to recover stolen items and to arrest suspects.
Any person who commits theft without violence or threat as stipulated under article 300 of the penal code, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
