Separate police operation conducted in Ngoma and Bugesera districts led to the arrest of four men, said to be part of chains of dealers in narcotics.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twezeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that the quartet was arrested on Thursday with varied quantities of cannabis.
He identified the suspects as Ezechiel Nkundabagenzi, 30, and Samuel Sebanani, 27, arrested in Bugesera; Innocent Habimana, 34, and Maniriho, 24, arrested in Ngoma.
"Information on their criminal dealings was provided by local residents. Nkundabagenzi is a known major supplier and was at the time of his arrest supplying his accomplice Sebanani," said CIP Twizeyimana.
"Two other suspects were arrested in Ngoma during operations to enforce government directives on preventing the spread of coronavirus."
Habimana was riding a bicycle when Police officers stopped him for unnecessary movement. On checking the luggage he had on the bicycle they found pellets of cannabis.
He later led the Police to his supplier Maniriho, who was also taken into custody.
"The public shouldn't be deceived to think that the current period when the government is fighting coronavirus, has left loopholes in security for them to roam freely in their criminal activities," CIP Twizeyimana warned.
He thanked residents for their continued partnership and information sharing on suspected wrongdoers.
