Duo caught giving bribes

Police and investigators in Nyagatare District have arrested two people in connection with attempting to offer bribes to order to carry on with criminal activities.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province identified the suspects as Vincent Byumviyimana and John Rukundo.

“Byumviyimana had earlier been intercepted in Byimana Cell Mimuli Sector with smuggled goods, he later tried to bribe the Police officer with Rwf200, 000 to release his seized goods and he was immediately taken into custody," CIP Kanamugire said.

"Rukundo was arrested the same day also in Rugari Cell, Mimuli Sector. He had a distillery that makes illicit brew and when police officers on operation reached there he tried to bribe them with Rwf10, 000 in order to let him continue with his criminal act," he added.

"Smuggling and making psychotropic substances are crimes, and bribery is another. A crime doesn't correct another, any unlawful act you commit will be brought against you in courts of law," the spokesperson warned.

The article 641 in Rwanda penal code stipulates that any person who directly or indirectly offers a gift in order to get an illegal service or refrain from carrying out their duties shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of between five and seven years or a fine of ten times value of what they had offered in bribe or both.
