The Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) intercepted on Tuesday, June 3, a vehicle in Nyarugenge District which was transporting 36 kilograms of cannabis.
The vehicle Toyata Verso was trailed and intercepted in Nyarusange village, Nyamweru cell of Kanyinya sector, at about 10a.m.
Two suspected men on board, aged 53 and 43, were arrested after Police recovered the narcotics, which were concealed in the spare tire compartment of the vehicle.
According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Wellars Gahonzire, the Police spokesperson for the central region, the operation which is part of intensified efforts to break the supply chain of narcotic drugs, followed credible information provided by residents.
“The narcotics, which initially were smuggled from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were being trafficked from Rubavu to Kigali. They were neatly hidden in the spare tire section of the vehicle in an attempt to beat security . This was part of an organized drug trafficking ring,” said CIP Gahonzire.
He commended the responsiveness of the public and timely information sharing leading to the arrest of the suspects and urged for continued collaboration in identifying and breaking chains of supply.
The suspects were handed over to the Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) at Kanyinya station for further legal process.
Article 263 of the law determining offences and penalties in general, provides a sentence of between 20 years and life imprisonment, and a fine of up to Frw30 million, for anyone convicted of trafficking and distributing very severe narcotic drugs.
