Police in Rubavu District, on Sunday, arrested one Aloys Ntamuhanga, 34, for allegedly trafficking narcotic drugs into the country.
Ntamuhanga was intercepted in Kivumu Village, Nengo Cell in Gisenyi Sector with 213 pellets of cannabis, was he was at the time trafficking from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said the suspect was arrested at Petite Barriere, the border with DRC in Rubavu, while trying to cross into Rwanda with the narcotics.
“He had concealed the pellets of cannabis in his socks. His trick was discovered thanks to information from someone who saw him stashing the narcotics into the socks," CIP Karekezi said.
"We understand that Ntamuhanga was contacted by another drug dealer only identified as Nzirorera to traffic them to Rugerero Sector from Goma in DRC."
CIP Karekezi thanked those who provided information, which helped to foil the attempted drug trafficking and subsequent arrest of the trafficker.
“Public ownership to report drug dealers and other wrongdoers is a key to sustainable security in our community and we call for continued information sharing on anyone they suspect to be trafficking, making or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.”
Under the penal code, especially in its article 263, major drug dealers face a term of between 20 years and life in prison.
If drug-related acts are performed to a child, the penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of up to Rwf50 million.
