Drug trafficker arrested with 10kg of cannabis wrapped around waist

A drug trafficker was arrested on April 29, in Nyamagabe District after he tried to traffic about 10 kilogrammes of cannabis.

Reverien Bimenyimana, 28, had wrapped the narcotics around his body in foiled attempt to beat security.

The passenger service vehicle was at the time traveling along Rusizi-Nyamagabe road.

“A resident in Rusizi, where Bimenyimana boarded the vehicle, noticed that he was nervous and his body looked anomalous, and he decided to call the Police,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Southern region police spokesperson, said.

“Along the way, passengers in the vehicle also got the same suspicions, and they called the Police as well. A checkpoint was mounted in Kitabi where the vehicle was stopped, the suspect identified as search, and cannabis weighting about 10kgs was wrapped around his waist, and he was immediately taken into custody,” he added.

“The suspect has since been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau officers (RIB) for further investigations,” said CIP Kayigi.

“We understand that wrapping cannabis around the body is one of the means traffickers use to attempt to beat security. There are other tricks like women carrying them at the back like babies or in their veils; others conceal them in foodstuffs and in vehicle or bicycle tyres. We are able to know all these tricks because of the good relations with the people, who give us information,” he explained.
