Drivers urged to be mindful of harsh weather conditions

Motorists have again been urged to take caution while on the road following recent heavy downpours that batter roads and likely to pose danger if drivers don’t take caution.

The heavy rains currently being experienced across the country have led to some incidents where trucks slid off the road and some vehicles got stuck.

Outlining the safety precautions drivers, passengers and pedestrians need to take, the Spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety Department of Rwanda National Police, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Ndushabanda said that during heavy rainfall, there are possibilities of tree falling in roads, floods or landslides of which drivers need to be more conscious of.

He went on to say that sometimes, weather can be unpredictable and turn quickly, making roads treacherous. Heavy rain and fog significantly increase the risks on roads.

“We advice the public to be extra careful, patient and cognizant of other road users. Strictly abide traffic control instructions and remember that, any form of disruptions may be necessary as part of the reinstatement process. Patience and cooperation are requested should this occur,” he said.

SSP Ndushabandi farther stated that for motorists, it is important to drive at or below the speed limit because braking in wet weather conditions may sometimes be difficult which could result in potentially high speed impacts.

He encouraged motorist that if the road ahead is flooded, they should choose another route and not attempt to drive through it.

“Motorist, need to always turn on the headlights to increase visibility and keep a good distance from the car in front. This is because mist can also reduce your vision,” he said.

“In places where roads flood, we appeal to drivers to be tolerant until the water levels subside. Furthermore, apply absolute caution on all drift areas along the road” Senior Supt Ndushabandi added.

Pedestrians were also urged to exercise caution and not to attempt to cross any sections of the road that are overtopped by floodwaters.

Some of the flood hotspots on roads and highways included Rwamagana-Kabuga-Remera highway and the intersection from Ndera in Gasabo District.
