Drivers urged to abide by traffic rules

The spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety Spokesperson, Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi has appealed to drivers to respect traffic rules to avoid likely accidents.

While briefing the media on May 27,  Supt. Ndushabandi, reminded owners of vehicles to take them for mechanical inspection to prevent accidents that can be caused by mechanical faults.

He gave an example of the last  Saturday fatal accident in Nyarugenge district which claimed four people and left thirteen others injured.

Supt. Ndushabandi said the truck registration number RAA 194L Benz type 'which was slopping loaded with soil, lost its brakes and rammed into vehicles and motorcycles which were coming from the opposite direction damaging eight motorcycles and eight vehicles and roadside security lights.

He said the injured are admitted at the rushed University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and six of them have so far been discharged.

The truck owner had defied the traffic orders to first fix mechanical problems it had after it was inspected on May 5 and ordered to fix the identified mechanical issues before hitting the road again.

“During the inspection, it was found out that the truck had problems with its brake, lighting and gas emission systems. He had been given 14 days to first fix those mechanical faults and bring it back for final inspection which he defied and continued using it in that sorry state, which resulted into the deadly incident," Supt. Ndushabandi explained.

He urged drivers to always take their vehicles for mechanical inspection to safeguard their lives and that of others.
