Driver take passengers to Police over drug trafficking

A driver of a public coaster belonging to travel agency heed the call against drug abuse and drove to a Police Post in Ngoma district and reported  three passengers on board suspected of trafficking cannabis.

Sylverien Mugabowindekwe, 35, who was bound to Kigali from Rusumo took Sylver Ndayishimiye, 22, Ramathan Rudacyemwa, 29, both from Kirehe district and Adrienne Uwamariya of Kamonyi district to Ngoma bus terminal Police Post where they were searched and uncovered 12 kilogrammes of cannabis concealed in their luggage.

The trio is currently detained at Kibungo Police station as investigation continues.

Mugabowindekwe said some passengers on board smelt the odour of the illegal drug and informed him.

"I had to make sure that I was not transporting criminals or illegal luggage; so I alerted Ngoma Police as I was driving from Kirehe who searched the vehicle on arrival and seized 12 kilogrammes of narcotics are arrested owners," Mugabowindekwe said.

Four kilogrammes were found in  Ndayishimiye’s luggage, three kilograms in  Rudacyemwa’s bag while five others  were uncovered in Uwamariya’s baggage.

Ndayishimiye, who confessed to the illegal business said they got the illegal plant from Kirehe and were transporting it to Kigali where they had buyers.

He also acknowledged that he knew the act was illegal and begged to be forgiven.

Senior Supt. (SSP), Bénoit  Nsengiyumva, Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province commended the driver and the passengers for the noble act and called upon the general public to emulate them.

"Fighting crimes is nolonger the responsibility of Police alone; the general population also have a right and responsibility to fight whatever they think can threaten their well-being by reporting those involved," SSP Nsengiyumva said.

He appealed to drivers especially of public vehicles to always be vigilant not to aid criminality by transporting wrongdoers and illegal luggage.
