Don't allow to be overloaded, passengers told

Police have called upon passengers not to accept to be overloaded, a traffic offence that has consequences to passengers.

This was after a public vehicle was intercepted on January 4, in Rubavu District with ten extra passengers as per its license.

While speaking to passengers, who were in the 32-seater bus, Inspector of Police (IP) Solange Nyiraneza reminded them that “ten extra passengers are not insured and are not eligible to compensation in case of accident.”

“Your life should be your primary responsibility. If the driver is speeding, driving recklessly or using the phone while driving, it's your lives he or she is putting in danger...don't allow it; tell the driver to stop such deadly behaviours, get out where necessary and call the police,” IP Nyiraneza told the passengers.

“Similarly, when you find that the vehicle is full, do not board it. Board vehicles that you are sure you're part of the vehicle insurance cover,” she added.

One of the passenger, Catherine Mukangwije appreciated the safety message from the Police.

“I am so grateful that Police officers stopped this bus; the fact is we were not comfortable, we were many in the vehicle,” Mukangwije said.

“They have also taught us our rights and responsibility to save lives and those of others,” she added.
