Rwanda National Police (RNP) has started leadership Workshop for district Police Commanders ,District and provincial Judicial officers aimed at refining their professional leadership skills in their daily work. The three-day workshop was launched on September 12 at the Police Training School (PTS), Gishari, by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana.
The IGP was accompanied by DIGP in charge of administration and personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda and Commissioners from RNP HQs.
The lectures will be delivered by Commissioners from different RNP departments, who will bring a unique understanding of the law enforcement culture and practical knowledge of how to overcome the challenges law enforcement leaders face in their operational settings.
Speaking at the opening, IGP Gasana started by reminding participants of RNP Vision, Mission and cores values which must guide them at all times.
The IGP noted that the workshop is part of RNP’s continuous efforts to improve the professional skills of its officers in order to keep updated with daily requirements of modern policing.
“Emerging security issues sprout up almost every day due to changes in modernity and technology. This means that we need experienced and skilled leaders who are up to the task of leading the force in overcoming such challenges to ensure that Rwanda is always safe and secure,” IGP Gasana said.
“Police officers should always be aware of the environment in which they operate and how to overcome criminal organizations that adapt to new forms of criminality aided by technology.
The crimes can either be local or transnational organised crimes.
"Therefore, you are expected to gain an understanding of how to apply leadership competencies in order to obtain the highest level of performance and accountability.”
He also urged police leaders to be champions and models of good leadership standards, as well as empowering emerging leaders to execute police goals professionally.
“Your work also involves appraising upcoming officers, appreciate and motivate new leaders, as well as maintain high levels of self-discipline,” he said.
Training has taken a central role at RNP whereby, capacity building was singled out as crucial to enabling police achieve its goal to maintain law and order.
