DIGP Ujeneza challenges RNP volleyball teams to go beyond trophies

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, on Saturday, October 10, met with Rwanda National Police (RNP) volleyball players, coaches and technical staff at Police General Headquarters in Kacyiru, Kigali, at the conclusion of a pre-season preparation session for the 2026–2027 season.

The session brought together the men’s and women’s teams, coaches, technical staff and media representatives, focusing on performance, discipline, teamwork and professional conduct.

Addressing the participants, DCG Ujeneza urged players to uphold discipline, hard work, mutual respect and determination.

“Always remember that you represent not only your teams, but also the Rwanda National Police and, whenever the opportunity arises, the country,” she said.

She called on coaches and technical staff to provide strong leadership and mentorship to develop players’ talent, confidence and teamwork, noting that their responsibility extends beyond winning matches.

“Your goal should go beyond winning trophies. It should also include developing your talent and proudly representing your institution,” she said.

The chairperson of the RNP volleyball teams, CSP Jackline Urujeni, emphasised the importance of professional conduct and responsible lifestyles, noting that players serve as role models for young people and that the teams also seek to strengthen police-community relations through sports.

“Your conduct off the court is just as important as your performance on it,” she said, cautioning players against substance abuse, including excessive alcohol consumption, the use of illicit alcoholic beverages and vaping. She also stressed the importance of managing workloads and maintaining their well-being throughout the season.

Volleyball expert Jean de Dieu Bagirishya, who was invited to deliver a session on sports management, explained that it involves planning, organising, leading and coordinating people and resources to achieve sporting and institutional goals.

“Our goal is to build a culture where everyone knows their role and owns the result,” he said.

As the teams prepare for the 2026–2027 season, the men’s squad has added six players, while the women’s team has recruited eight, including international signings. Last season, the men’s team finished second at the CAVB Men's African Volleyball Club Championship.
