Development and sovereignty hinges on youth– CP Butera

Rwanda's development and its sovereignty are mainly hinged on the vibrancy and patriotism of her youth, the Commissioner of Operations at Rwanda National Police (RNP) CP Emmanuel Butera said yesterday.

He made the remarks while addressing over 800 freshmen students of University of Rwanda- College of Business and Economic who are in their induction week where he presented on the role of youth in nation's development and advancement of sovereignty.

In company of the Commissioner for Community Policing, ACP Damas Gatare, CP Butera gave a detailed background on the role of youth in liberating Rwanda and how they have since constituted the biggest part of those contributing to national development. 

He challenged them to be part of social economic transformation of the country saying that; “You are the future of our nation. For you to be exemplary leaders, you must be characterized with patriotism, discipline, transparency and hard work. Without the four you can achieve a lot.”

He added that, “guided with the spirit of patriotism, youth can facilitate national development and human security activities. Youth can and have played pivotal role in social conflict resolutions like settling family conflicts,” said the Commissioner as he spoke of the abilities of youth.

CP Butera further pointed out that Rwanda’s main resource is its people, of which the biggest percentage is the youth. “This implies that, to achieve sustainable development, the youth have played a major role precisely in wealth creation which has translated into economic development.”

He also challenged them to emulate those that shaped the country‘s politics that brought on board effective strategies of unity reconciliation and security.

Students pledged to form several anti-crime clubs that would facilitate them interact and exchange views on how best they can contribute to crime prevention and national development.

“One of the things that we have learnt is that, we don’t need to be called to serve our country. It’s our responsibility that we must execute with passion,” said Christine Akamuntu one of the students.
