Cyclists sensitized on road safety, fighting illicit drugs

Commercial cyclists in Gakenke and Kicukiro districts have called upon commercial cyclists to desist from abusing drugs and over consumption of alcohol, and to use roads safely not to cause or involved in accident.

The call was made on November 27 by police during the separate meetings that brought together over 500 cyclists, altogether.

This was during a regular police community outreach exercise as part of community policing initiatives.

In Kicukiro, Donatien Murenzi, the executive secretary for Kagarama Sector, said that drug and overuse of alcohol is detrimental to their live and counterproductive to national and individual development.

Inspector of Police (IP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the District Community Liaison Officer of Kicukiro also urged them to be vigilant not to be used to transport illegal luggage like drugs and stolen goods.

In Gakenke, Inspector of Police (IP) Zaire Rugerinyange also reiterated the dangers of drug abuse and road usage.

He was speaking to cyclists operating along Kaziba-Gakenke-Base roads shortly after a special Umuganda exercise.

He asked them to always respect road safety regulations and traffic signs. He further reminded them to always wear reflector jackets to prevent being hit by vehicles especially at night.

Motorcyclists are the third leading cause or victims of traffic accidents.
