Over 150 commercial motorcyclists operating in Nyarugenge District organised under their cooperative-- COTRAMONYA--have recommitted to play an active role in the fight against crimes particularly trafficking of illicit drugs and abuse.
The taxi-motor operators made fresh commitment this week during their meeting with the Police held in Nyarugenge Sector.
The meeting served as a platform for the Police to sensitize the motorcyclists on community Policing and mobilize them to equally play a lead role in security matters.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Goreth Umutesi, the District Community Liaison Officers in Nyarugenge, while addressing the motorcyclists, reminded them that, “security is a basis for economic progress."
"Security matters are not only the responsibility of Police and other security agencies, it's the duty of everyone. When you see someone committing a crime or planning to commit one, always report them, that way you will have played your part in fighting and preventing crime, we have to work together as a team," the DCLO told motorcyclists.
“The remarkable development our country continue to enjoy is all because of peace and security. Business people and particularly commercial motorcyclists are able to run their businesses during day and night because we have security," CIP Umutesi noted.
She emphasized the need yo work together against drug related crimes, noting that some drug dealers use their transport means to traffic narcotics from one place to another.
On a number of ocassion, motorcyclists have been arrested transporting narcotics or drug dealers.
"Always be vigilant; the people you transport could be wrongdoers or the luggage they're carrying could be illegal," she said.
She, however, thanked some motorcyclists who work with the police to fight and prevent crimes.
In one of many cases, a motorcyclists recently took a girl he was transporting to police after he realised that she had stolen a baby from biological parents.
In other cases, motorcyclists either report or take their passengers to police after realizing that they are trafficking narcotic drugs.
