Crime preventers in Kamonyi discuss security, reunite disputed families

Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Kamonyi District have been reminded to be vigilant in ensuring sustainability of security and safety of their neighborhoods.

The District Community Liaison Officer of Kamonyi, Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira on October 20 during a meeting held in Karama Sector and also attended by local leaders.

The meeting focused on discussing anti-crime measures and strengthening partnerships that enable collective initiatives against threats to peace and security in neighborhoods.

IP Niyonagira reminded the CPCs to be professional and exemplary in their daily community policing activities in order to win the trust of the residents.

“Residents need to trust you – but you cannot earn their trust if you are caught up in drunkenness, abusing drugs, conniving with criminals or not conducting your work efficiently on a daily basis. Your work is paramount and needs uttermost focus and respect,” IP Niyonagira said.

“Overall, community policing works well if your conduct is trustworthy. Through that, residents will be comfortable to work with you to report crime and ensure success in protecting their communities against criminals.”

One of the CPCs, Aimable Muyoboke, urged his counterparts to heed to the advice and be patriotic in their work.

“Police has enabled us to work efficiently in sustaining the peace of our community. We should work together and avoid indulging in activities like drunkenness which affect our work. We have to show the importance of our work by being professional,” Muyoboke said.

The executive secretary of Karama Sector, Francois Sebagabo, commended Rwanda National Police (RNP) for its commitment to community security, and called on the CPCs and other community crime preventers to sustain beneficial partnership with police.

After the meeting, the local leaders and police officers met and reconciled over 30 married couples in the area who were marred with domestic disputes, and shared ideas on how they can resolve their differences.

Community policing has gained momentum over the years as RNP, local leaders, crime preventers and the general public continue to work together to promote safety and security and to enhance the quality of life in neighborhoods.
