CPCs urged to increase vigilance against crime

Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Rutsiro District have been urged to initiate stronger measures against crime and lawlessness in their neighborhoods.

Speaking during a meeting that drew 461 CPCs, Rutsiro District Police Commander (DPC), Superintendent Jean Baptiste Mutabazi, called on committee meters to sensitize residents about their role in crime prevention.

The meeting was met to discuss measures on how to improve partnership between CPCs and Rwanda National Police (RNP) in combating crime.

Mutabazi urged the CPCs to get closer to citizens and understand their challenges to security and safety.

“You have become an important part in fostering safety and security in your neighborhoods. Many people rely on you, therefore, you should be professional and disciplined at all times and ensure that citizens trust you with their information,” he said.

“Police will always have open channels in order to foster cooperation to overcome crimes in community such as gender-based-violence, burglary and drug abuse among others. You should always be devoted in this important service that you provide.”

He also urged them to strengthen efforts and tighten night patrols in order to maintain a high level of security in all communities and also have a good understanding of residents’ challenges so that they can offer durable solutions.

The Community Policing strategy implemented by RNP brings the general public together in solving local problems and to contribute to the enhancement of the overall quality of life in the communities.

Community policing also increases a sense of responsibility, whereby citizens understand their role in partnering with Police in solving crimes and other challenges.
