CPCs called to be exemplary in ensuring safety

Community Policing Committees (CPCs) have been called to work harder to ensure safety in their neighborhoods and continue working with citizens to solve pertinent challenges that face them.

The message was delivered by Hadidja Umubyeyi, the Sector civil status Affairs franked  by District Police Commander of Gatsibo, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Eric Kabera, during a sensitization seminar held in the district on May 19.

Hadidja Umubyeyi commended RNP for reaching out to communities with the strong message against crime and urged CPCs to be exemplary in order to ensure safety of their localities and gain more trust from the residents.

“Your results will depemd on how better you work with the public and you should not be on the side of criminals but instead fight against them by providing the information you get from residents immediately to police. If we work together, criminals will understand that there is no chance for them to go unpunished,” she said. The meeting attracted over 250 CPCs operating in the district, local leaders and residents.

In his remarks, CIP Kabera noted that Police has developed partnerships with local residents and the business community, which necessitate CPCs to operate professionally and efficiently to maintain that relationship.

“Members of CPCs should encourage interactive partnerships and leverage connections within the community, which help to gather credible information that enables Rwanda National Police (RNP) to solve public safety problems,” he said.

“On our part, RNP will continue to provide you with what is necessary to uphold your work in promoting safety and promoting anti-crime sensitization.”

He reminded them to always be vigilant against emerging crimes and encourage the youth to denounce the use of drugs that bring about dangerous consequences to their lives and to their society.

The strategy of community policing has been influential in reducing crime throughout the country, and is run on a philosophy that promotes proactive partnerships with the public to address public safety issues such as social disorder and insecurity.
