Community vigilance needed to root out drug abuse

The Eastern Region Police Commander, assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dismas Rutaganira has called upon residents of Nyagatare district to desist from consumption and brewing of illicit alcohol and warned that those adamant will be arrested and subsequently prosecuted.

ACP Rutaganira was speaking on October 17 to hundred of Nyagatare residents during a police community outreached exercise to sensitize the public against lawlessness.

He urged people of good will to remain firm and report all wrongdoers who engage in life threatening vices such as unhealthy alcoholic drinks

ACP Rutaganira was speaking in light of an assortment of illicit drugs recently seized from different places in operations.

The regional police chief cautioned motorcyclists and other public transporters to desist from abetting crime by transporting illegal products

 “I want you to be vigilant, firm and open in reporting those involved; if this is done well, we shall collectively eliminate drugs and avoid unnecessary consequences” he said.

He noted that families and the community are being impacted negatively by drug abuse.

The District Mayor, George Mupenzi noted that; “this was not only a law enforcement issue but rather one the entire community must solve together. “We look forward to working with partners to seek solutions.”
