Youth from Kamonyi and Ngororero Districts have been called upon to play a lead role in crime prevention in their neighborhoods by being anti-crime ambassadors.
The message was echoed in two separate forums in the two districts.
In Kamonyi District, the District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marcel Kalisa met youth in the district and tutored them about effects of drug abuse and their role in fighting drug related crimes.
The meeting held on October 17, was attended by over 100 youth from Gacurabwenge and Rukoma sectors. This was shortly after the youth and police constructed houses for survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
“Youth constitute the biggest percentage of the Rwandan society; it is important to participate in community policing mainly through crime prevention, cooperating with Police by providing timely information to solve or prevent a crime, volunteer in communities to teach and sensitize their fellow youth about the dangers of involving in unlawful acts like abusing drugs,” said CIP Kalisa.
He went on to outline their role in nation building saying that Rwanda wants a health populations free from any form of disease.
“Drug consumption may lead someone to other bad things and the end results may have an effect on our nation’s development ; that’s why we urge you to avoid taking that path,” CIP Kalisa added.
Other effects of drug abuse, according to CIP Kalisa, include turning violent and forcing uswes to commit other crimes like theft, rape and defilement.
The Kamonyi vice mayor in charge of economic affairs, Alice Uwera, dwelt her tutorial to the youth on fighting Gender Based Violence and urged them to report to police anyone that maybe involved in such offices.
Uwera’s message was in line with the ongoing Anti-GBV campaign launched by the Prime Minister, Anastase Murekezi during an event held in Muhanga last week. The campaign is due to run up to the end of December.
In Ngororero, the District Community Liaison Officer, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Alexandre Minani held a townhall meeting with over 450 students from TTC Muramba and sensitized them to be anti-crime ambassadors during their upcoming holidays.
“You will soon break off for holidays, make sure you effectively utilize your time during these holidays by being ambassadors against crimes in your communities,” said AIP Minani.
AIP Minani also introduced to students the topic on human trafficking.
He told them that the anti-human trafficking campaign is part of RNP’s outreach programme to keep Rwandans safe and aware of the modern day slavery and tricks traffickers use to lure the unsuspecting targets.
He explained to them that some victims are sometimes taken by use of force, threat or abduction while majority are deceived or manipulated due to their vulnerability, to believe that there is a better life where they are headed.
Also as part of the crime prevention mechanisms, Minani urged students not to abuse drugs and went on to highlight diverse effect of drug consumption.
