Community Policing: Rwamagana launches 'professional Irondo patrol'

The community policing aspect took another level in Rwamagana District on Tuesday when the district leadership launched the 'Professional Irondo night patrol.'

The professional community night patrol locally known as 'Irondo ry'umwuga' was launched in four sectors of Munyaga, Rubona, Gahengeri and Fumbwe.

The Tuesday launch means that all sectors of Rwamagana have professional Irondo following a similar exercise conducted in other sectors recently.

The Mayor of Rwamagana, Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi, while addressing residents at the official launch, said this is aimed at ensuring that "criminal and unlawful activities are effectively addressed in an appropriate manner."

"It's all about supporting security organs in ensuring community safety and peace," the mayor said.

He, however, emphasized professionalism and discipline of the members of Irondo and to keep the trust people and the country have in them.

"Draw lessons from other security agencies;  when you are called to serve you should serve with commitment. You are here to be where police or other security organs can't be by giving them information on any unlawful acts. That necessitates you to work closely with other security organs, local leaders and the people," Mayor Mbonyumuvunyi said.

During the event, members of the new Irondo  personnel were also given some equipment such as mobile phones and torch, which will facilitate their communication and in other community policing activities.

Currently, Rwamagana has over 2,000 members of the Professional Irondo Patrol operating in all the 14 sectors.

The event was also attended by several senior officers from Police and Army.
