The Community policing strategy is one of the Rwanda National Police approaches in crime prevention.
This concept confirms the ideal multi approach system where the police, the public, faith based organizations, leaders at all levels, NGOs and private sector join forces to ensure security and safety in the country.
This effective approach has shown a positive impact in reducing neighborhood crime, enhanced quality of life and less fear of crime. It accomplishes these by combining the ideas, efforts, resources of the police, local government and community members.
This is because crimes can only be easily prevented if the community play its role of sharing information with police to ensure that criminals are apprehended in time.
Human security is a very important aspect in community policing.
On top of ensuring law and order as well as protecting people and their property, promoting citizens’ welfare through poverty eradication is another method used to ensure security.
The move has ensured that people are attracted to income generating activities instead of engaging in criminal activities.
Rwanda National police as a law enforcement institution has a mandate of ensuring people living in Rwanda are safe involved and reassured. Two hands are better than one. Together, we can ensure sustainable security, not only by fighting and preventing crimes but also by eradicating poverty, another aspect considered a security threat.
