Members of community night patrols in Kicukiro District have been tasked to stand up against criminality and put together to form proactive crime preventive measures.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Baptiste Seminega, the Commanding Officer of the Fire and Rescue Brigade at Rwanda National Police, made the remarks during the opening of a weeklong training for community night patrol members of Kicukiro on August 15.
The session attracted over 180 members of community night patrols, residents and local leaders of the district.
ACP Seminega noted that community patrols have the potential to increase safety, as well as, to assist in reducing crime rates and empower the local community against criminals.
“For community patrols to be successful, they should look towards community involvement and embark on strong collaboration with police as well as build a network with other law enforcers to collectively overcome crime,” he said.
He also reminded them to be involved in family dispute resolution and mediation, domestic violence and gender-based-violence, and also cooperate closely with other community-based programs and initiatives as well as the police units in their areas.
He further called them to be involved in awareness campaigns on firefighting and teach people about causes of fire outbreaks such as; careless lighting of fires and short circuits among others.
More to that, he observed community night patrols should strive to identify suspicious causes of insecurity and provide timely information with police so that such incidences are prevented before they lead to grave consequences.
Community night patrols have been instrumental in helping Police to ensure maximum safety for lives and property through a fruitful partnership that focuses on involving residents in the security and safety of their neighborhoods.
