Commercial motorcyclists urged to take a lead in crime prevention

Commercial motorcyclists can play a significant role in crime prevention considering that they are exposed to a wide range of people, which gives them the ability to identify and report any suspected criminal before they commit offenses.

While addressing about 4000 Commercial motorcyclists operating in Musanze district on Friday July 31, Rwanda National Police's Commissioner for Community Policing, ACP Damas Gatare, urged them to work closely with security organs in crime prevention.

In an event that took place at Ubworoherane Stadium in Umuhoza sector of Musanze District, ACP Gatare told the youthful commercial motorcyclists that their contribution to crime prevention is mainly timely report and information sharing whenever they are suspicious of anything.

“For you to run an effective business, you need to be secure; we are here to partner in this quest of making our communities crime-free,” ACP Gatare told the motorcyclists.

He further urged them to always participate in neighborhood watch and strive to offer quality services to clients.

“Rwanda National Police and the public recognize and highly appreciate the great job you do especially in the transport sector. The trust we have in you should not be taken lightly...We encourage you to aim for more but in a safe and secure manner,” said ACP Gatare.

The district vice Mayor in charge of Social Affair, Vincent Ndayambaje, commended the existing partnership with the Police in fighting crime like drug abuse and ensuring road safety among others.

Safari Muberuka, the President of the commercial motorcycle association in the Northern Province lauded RNP for reaching out to them saying that Police officers have taken their relationship with the motorcyclists a step farther to help them improve their welfare.

Muberuka urged his colleagues to make security their primary responsibility and always tip security organs on those they suspect to be carrying narcotic drugs and anything that could be a security threat.

At the event, motorcycle operators expressed commitment to further partner with security organs to ensure suspected criminals are arrested before committing offences.

Rwanda National Police, last year in February donated Rwf 1 million to a cooperative of tax motor operators in Musanze District organized under an acronym, COTAMONO.

The financial support and a trophy was a token of appreciation for their outstanding good conduct cooperation and discipline through respecting traffic rules and fighting crimes.

The force remains committed to support commercial motorcycle operators and the public in general, an initiative aimed at contributing towards security.
