Commercial cyclists in Nyamata sensitized on crime prevention

Commercial cyclists operating in Nyamata sector, Bugesera District have been called upon to join efforts with law enforcement and local authorities, to report suspected wrongdoers.

The call was made by police and local leaders during a meeting with the cyclists, aimed at raising awareness against lawlessness and to acquaint them with the community policing concept.

The acting District Police Commander of Bugesera, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Ntaburana, reminded over 100 cyclists, who attended the meeting that transporting a criminal is facilitating criminality, which they will also be accountable to.

The cyclists are organized under their cooperative – C OTAVENYA.

He noted that criminals especially drug traffickers, seek and use their services, an act they should fight by exposing their members who engage in such unlawful acts.

The DPC also urged them to respect road traffic standards to ensure their safety and that of their passengers as well as other road users.

Cyclists are said to be among the major cause and involved in fatal accidents.

“Put safety first in your transportation business to prevent accidents that result from reckless use of roads,” CIP Ntaburana advised.

“This is a business, and don’t let people use it to commit crimes. When you see anyone trying to commit a crime, like drug traffickers, thieves, be quick to report them; be crime preventers,” he added.

The executive secretary of Nyamata sector Fred Rurangirwa reiterated the benefits of security to social and economic development urging them to observe vigilance and exercise caution who they transport.

The President of COTAVENYA Janvier Nizeyimana, said together with his members, they will join together to fight crime including their members, who could be engaged in unlawful activities
