Commercial bicyclists told to respect traffic rules

Commercial bicyclists must act their part in ensuring traffic safety as well as safeguard their business from being infiltrated by criminals such as drug smugglers and thieves.

The message was delivered by Assistant Inspector (AIP) of Police Thomas Nzabamwita, the District Community Liaison Officer of Nyabihu, during a meeting with over 50 commercial bicyclists in the district.

"When you ride a bicycle, you must obey the general road rules like other road users, as well as follow the specific road rules for cyclists. This will help prevent careless accidents," he said.

Obeying traffic signals and signs makes you predictable to other drivers, and is the safest way to ride. Having equal rights to roads means also having equal responsibilities."

He also urged them to cooperate with Police in the element of community policing by offering timely information on any individuals who may be masquerading in the business while conducting criminal activities.

In January this year, Police partnered with Gasabo District to donate five motorcycles to specific commercial bicyclists in a bid to motivate their upgrade to motorcycling business.
