CoK, RNP launch second phase of security and hygiene campaign

The Mayor of City of Kigali Pascal Nyamulinda yesterday presided over the launch of the the second phase of the seventh edition of the “Security and Hygiene” campaign in an event held at the City Hall and attended by several officials along with Police Officers.

Speaking at the launch, the lord Mayor challenged bars, restaurants owners and markets to strictly observe public health guidelines by ensuring that hygiene and sanitation are monitored and frequently improved.

In referring to the findings of the just concluded phase, Mayor Nyamulinda said that some public places were found to be lacking in terms of hygiene which could threaten the health of the public if no improvements are made.

The second phase of the seventh edition of the Security and Hygiene will run under the Theme; “keeping Kigali city clean, green and safe”

Such campaigns are normally aimed at bringing various players on board to improve human security activities through strengthening security and hygiene within the city.

The Mayor reminded that; “poor hygiene breed’s diseases that eventually incapacitates the public and fail to engage into productive works.”

He asked local authorities to heighten hygiene inspections in all public places to ensure those found to have substandard kitchens are corrected.

Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner for Operations at Rwanda National Police, CP Emmanuel Butera acknowledged the contribution of stakeholders in the previous phases and called for efforts in ensuring the success of the next period.

He said that hygiene and sanitation should be ensured due to its strategic nature to threats on human security and reiterated RNP’s commitment to guarantee the public remains safe and secure in all aspects.

“A sick person will not be productive economically who may also engage in underhand methods for survival consequently leading to crimes,” said CP Butera.

He further said that good collaboration between authorities, traders and consumers helps ensure hygiene and sanitation is observed.

The second phase will focus on security, and will include enforcement of actions that will be taken in areas where standards are not respected. Here, awareness and strict inspections will be carried out, and penalties imposed against those that do not comply with hygiene and security standards in the City of Kigali.

The campaign is in line with the agreement signed between RNP and the three urban districts of Nyarugenge, Kicukiro and Gasabo, to partner in different areas.

These include building stronger and functioning community policing committees, community night patrols, fight drug abuse, domestic violence, noise pollution, sale of alcoholic drinks to minors, fire outbreak, public order management and promoting road security.
