City traders in community policing loop

Community policing is a modern strategy that responds effectively to security challenges that requires strong partnership with the private sector to create a conducive environment that favors doing business, Assistant Commissioner of Police Damas Gatare, the Commissioner for Public Relations and Community Policing in Rwanda National Police, said.

ACP Gatare, who doubles as Police spokesperson was speaking on Thursday to over 400 owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from the City of Kigali, who are attending a three-day civic education at Nkumba Leadership and Peace Centre in Burera District.

It was organized by National Itorero Commission.

In a lecture titled, “Community Policing as a Contemporary Police Strategy,” ACP Gatare said the concept of security has “expanded dramatically to include threats that affect not only the armed forces, but also the political, economic and social spheres human security.”

He said the proactive policing approach has brought confidence, trust and ownership of general public especially private sector where investment climate has groomed, party through police-private sector partnership.

“RNP adopted new techniques of e-Policing to respond to emerging security challenges that reflect the complexity of modern security threats that require endorsing community policing philosophy” ACP Gatare said.

He further said the best way of doing business should move with national interests and government policies and urged them to develop a sense of self reliance and embrace home-grown development initiatives like Agaciro and Ndi Umunyarwanda.

Boniface Rucagu, the Chairperson of the national Itorero task force commended the role played by the RNP to lay a secure foundation for doing business and development.

Rucagu urged the business community to strengthen partnership with security organs to prevent anything that can affect their business growth.
