Casual workers challenged on fighting drug trafficking

About 50 casual workers operating in Rubavu District have been urged to step up their efforts in crime prevention particularly fighting against drug trafficking.

They were also called upon too be vigilant and report any person they come across with an illegal luggage or involved in unlawful acts.

The call was made by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) Inspector of Police (IP) Solange Nyiraneza during a meeting held on December 17, in Gisenyi Sector.

It brought together all casual labourers and their leadership.

“Drug traffickers may seek your services at any given time that’s why you need to know what you are carrying. In case you encounter a drug trafficker, inform the police immediately,” said Nyiraneza.

“It is important to participate in community policing mainly through crime prevention, cooperating with Police by providing  timely information to solve or prevent a crime, volunteer in communities to teach and sensitize their fellow youth about the dangers of involving in unlawful acts like abusing drugs.”

IP Nyiraneza outlined their role in nation building saying that Rwanda wants a health population free from any form of disease.

“Drug consumption may lead someone to other bad things and the end results may have an effect on our nation’s development; that’s why we urge you to avoid taking that path and also report whoever may be involved,” she said.

Other effects of drug abuse, according to IP Nyiraneza, include violence and other crimes like theft, rape and defilement.

Evariste Ngizimana, the head of the association of the casual labourers, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues announced their commitment in crime prevention and pledged to work closely with Police.
