Car vandals arrested in Kigali

Two men suspected of being vandalizing windows and stealing electronic from vehicles in Kigali were arrested on March 19 in Gasabo district, as Rwanda National Police continues operations to curb urban and petty crime in the country.

Identified as Olivier Kwizera, 18 and Sage Habimana, 24, are believed to have been working together, whereby, they stalked drivers and stole equipment such as phones, laptops, car radios and other accessories from parked cars.

They are currently held at Remera Police Station as further investigation commence.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Modest Mbabazi, the Police Spokesperson for Central Region, said that the two were arrested following Police investigations into theft in cars in the city.

They were caught in the act, he said.

“The two men employed very many tricks to commit their crimes. Sometimes one of them tricked a driver by confusing him, while another stealthily grabbed any items from the car. On other occasions, they trailed their victims – and once they parked their cars - they would break in and steal accessories,” he said.

“Residents are urged to cooperate with Police through community policing in order to overcome crimes such as these. If you suspect someone or a group of people involved or trying to commit a crime, deliver the information to Police in a timely manner so that we investigate and protect our society.”

In each of the three districts that make up the city (Gasabo, Kicukiro, Nyarugenge), Police has set up strong units to combat both petty and serious crime problem, which has led to substantial improvement in both the reality and perception of safety among the citizenry, he said.
