As part of the ongoing anti-narcotics campaign in schools across the country, Police met with over 900 students of GS Raphael in Nyabihu District and tutored them the dangers of abusing drugs and their role in fighting and reporting drug traffickers.
Inspector of Police (IP) Alexandre Minani, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Nyabihu, while addressing the students, said the wellbeing of the young people remains one of the government priorities, especially through fighting drug abuse, the leading factor affecting them.
This, he added, is why Rwanda National Police is actively involved in school-to-school awareness programme teaching the young generation on the ill-effects of abusing illicit drugs and the legal repercussions involved.
IP Minani appealed to them to “stand for what you represent as future leaders” by refraining from such unlawful behavior, instead partner with police to identify especially the suppliers of narcotics like cannabis, to break the chain of supply.
“Education and drug abuse don’t mix. As young and able people you have a big role to play, first by saying no to drugs, joining community policing efforts to identify and report dealers,” he told the students.
The youth, through their different policing forums such as anti-crime clubs have been credited for championing awareness against drug abuse.
IP Minani also told GS Raphael students to “never consume illegal substances” noting that it’s both a crime and a major factor influencing bad habits especially among the youth like theft, sexual behavior that lead to teenage or unwanted pregnancies, and dropping out of school.
The Head-teacher, Erica Hagumimana commended RNP’s continued efforts and dedication to fight and prevent drug abuse among the youth.
He called upon the students to become partners in the campaign to further fight the vice by refraining and sharing credible information on those involved to ensure they (suspects) are arrested.
