Burera: Youth urged on environmental crime

The youth in Burera District have been called upon to play an active role to protect the ecosystem.

Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Phelin Nshimyumukiza, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Burera made the call on September 22, while addressing over 350 students of GS Kinyababa.

He urged them to be ambassadors of environmental protection by reporting anyone they witness degrading or destroying nature.

The awareness on environmental protection was also attended by the executive secretary of Kinyababa Sector, Marry Nyirasafari as well as the district coordinator of youth and culture, Jean dela Croix Nsengiyumva.

“Anti-crime clubs including those formed in this school have equally driven the agenda of safety and security, including protecting the environmental; don’t wither,” the DCLO said.

There are about 2000 anti-crime clubs across the country, majority formed in schools.

The DCLO also urged them to report drug dealers in their communities. Burera is one of the transit routes for illicit drugs, especially banned gin.

Nyirasafari reminded that they have a chance to be in school, where they also learn the impact of ecosystem like rainfall, and urged them to put in practice what they are taught by passing over the knowledge to their parents and people on their communities.

On his part, Nsengiyunva challenged the youngsters to be the eyes and ears of safety and development.
