Burera urged to join fight against human trafficking

Rwanda National Police (RNP) reached out to residents of Burera District on November 14, and urged them to be on the lookout against anyone that may lure them into believing they can get them good jobs abroad, saying that such people’s intentions are most likely to be attempting to traffick them.

This was during the Mobile Police Station Vehicle’s journey to the district, where close to 2000 people turned up to understand their community policing role.

The discussions focused on understanding and fighting human trafficking, combating cross border crimes, drug abuse, Gender Based Violence and combating illegal mining.

While addressing residents, Inspector of Police (IP) Vivian Umulisa noted that human traffickers employ different tricks to try to tempt their potential target into believing that they are headed to better life.

“There are people that may attempt to lure you with good jobs, in foreign countries but this is not what happens, normally victims of human trafficking are flipped into prostitution or forced labors,”‎ she said.

‎She urged them to share information with police about anyone suspected to be involved in human trafficking.

As part of the ongoing anti-Gender Based Violence and Child abuse nationwide campaign, Police also enlightened residents of Burera about the partnership in fighting the vice, as well as find ways of helping families to resolve their domestic differences.

“Anything that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering should be fought by everyone in society. Such acts are a challenge to public health and a barrier to social and economic development. They undermine the safety and dignity of individuals,” IP Umulisa said.

She added that, “it is vital to promote the rights of all Rwandans and eliminate the harmful effects of GBV on individuals and communities.”

Residents were also sensitized on environmental protection and the need to preserve natural resources like wetlands, wells, rivers and lakes in their area.

“A well-preserved environment is very important not only to our lives but has a direct positive impact to the development of the country. Preserving the environment is everyone’s responsibility,” Umulisa said.

The Police, through their Mobile Police Station Vehicle service, also recorded complaints from residents in Rugarama Sector.

The Mobile Police Station Vehicle is an innovative through which RNP reaches out to people in remote area. The service is particularly extended to citizens residing or working in places located far away from Police stations, whereby, a mobile vehicle treks through the terrain searching for those wishing to make complaints or file their grievances to the police.
