Two people have been arrested in Burera District in connection with embezzling money from a local teachers’ savings and credit cooperative.
Those arrested include an employee at the Sacco branch and a teacher.
They are said to have connived to embezzle about Rwf1.5 million from the credit and savings accounts, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said.
“Investigations indicate that the two were making illegal financial transactions, and the money was withdrawn on different occasions,” CIP Twizeyimana said.
“Preliminary findings indicate that this act started back in November last year but investigations are still underway to determine how much exactly was embezzled,” the spokesperson said.
Clause one of article 325 of the Rwandan penal code states that any employee who embezzles public or private property, funds, negotiable instruments, documents, or movable property which are entrusted to him or her, by virtue of his or her office shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of seven to ten years and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled or destroyed property.
