Burera: Stern warning as illicit drugs are destroyed

Illicit drugs including over 1240 litres of Kanyanga and 378 packets of Blue Sky, illicit gins were destroyed on August 6 in Burera District with a call for the general public to strengthen their cooperation with Police to prevent drug abuse in the country.

Also destroyed in the public exercised held in Ndago cell of Rusarambuye sector is kanyanga, cannabis, twenty boxes of chief waragi, two cartons of Zebra and two boxes Kick, also an illicit gin trafficked into the country.

About eighteen tones of Kabaruka, a local plant seized being trafficked out of the country were also destroyed.

The District Police Commander (DPC) Senior Supt. Félix Rutayisire said the illicit drugs were confiscated in the past few months in various parts of the district.

He said most culprits were arrested, some of them already serving varied prison sentences and thanked area residents for the ‘commendable work’ in providing information on the dealers.

He also warned against illegal cutting of trees, which is an act of environmental degradation and punishable by the law.

The destruction exercise was also attended by the district Mayor, Samuel Sembagare, who appealed to the residents to refrain from such unlawful acts and join efforts with security organs by reporting those involved.
