Police in Burera District has called upon members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in the district, to strengthen their crime prevention and human security activities.
The meeting held over the weekend brought together members of the youth group from the sectors of Rugarama ,Cyanika, Gahunga and Kagogo.
While addressing the young people, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Northern region Police spokesperson, thanked them for their dedication and commitment in human security activities.
He observed that their donations like livestock, constructing and renovating houses and hygiene facilities like toilets, address human security concerns.
There are over 260000 members of RYVCP across the country.
Human security and community development activities conducted by the youth volunteers since 2013 are valued at over Rwf630 million.
They constructed and rehabilitated over 13308 houses for the disadvantaged families, construction and rehabilitation of 1440km of roads linking communities, constructed 1989 toilets, and planted over 67800 trees as part of the afforestation and environmental conservation programme.
"You have played a big role in addressing security concerns through awareness, don't fall back. We need to continue to work together to address especially drug related crimes that are still prevalent in Burera," CIP Twizeyimana said.
He also highlighted Gender based Violence (GBV), child abuse, human trafficking and corruption as other high impact crimes that need emphasis.
The meeting was also climaxed with the public destruction of narcotic drugs valued at over Rwf500, 000.
The narcotic drugs were seized in operations conducted in Gahunga and Cyanika sectors.
