Police in Burera district, on Tuesday, arrested two people for allegedly trafficking and dealing in kanyanga, an illicit gin.
The suspects; Dioni Narayisenze and Jean Niyotwiringiye were intercepted in Kiyogera cell of Gatebe sector with 120 litres of kanyanga.
Kanyanga is classified as a psychotropic substance, with an imprisonment of up to seven years, upon conviction.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Rugigana, the spokesperson for the Northern region said the duo was arrested after crossing into Rwanda from Uganda with jerrycans of the illicit gin.
“They had used a porous border and were going to supply sellers in Ruhunde,” CIP Rugigana said.
He noted that dealers have changed tricks of smuggling Kanyanga.
“Dealers use minors to bring Kanyanga and they pay them Rwf3, 000 upon arrival to the agreed destination. This is a serious crime to use minors in drug related acts," he warned."
CIP Rugigana thanked residents, who shared information on the traffickers leading to their arrest.
